He Is Risen For You

Mark 16:1-8

April 16, 2017 at 9am

Grace and mercy to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

It is written:  When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.  Thus far the text.

Let us pray:  Gracious heavenly Father, the women were fully prepared to give Jesus a proper and traditional burial. However, they were not prepared for the resurrection that awaited them at the empy tomb. O Lord, we want to be ready, grant us a faith in Your only-begotten Son, that we live with you now, even as we await the resurrection of our own bodies; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Savior. Amen.

The women had a plan to prepare Jesus for burial with one exception. They did not know how they would roll away the stone in front of Jesus' tomb.

They were so well prepared they even had all the spices arranged and packed in order to leave "very early in the morning" while the sun was just breaking the horizon. While they were walking to the tomb, they discussed the problem of the stone.

This sets the stage for the resurrection in terms of what do you need to do to prepare for the resurrection. False teachers have arisen throughout the centuries who have come up with clever answers that are contrary to the Gospel.

For example, you need to do this or that to make up for your short-comings; your sins. Or, you need to suffer more. Or, you need to believe more or make a decision for Jesus.

It is natural for people to want to make up for their short-comings; to make up for their sins.

Luther said, "There is not one thing you can do to make up for the smallest sin. Yet at the same time, God through the Gospel of Jesus Christ forgives us both our smallest and largest sins."

So the women thought they were prepared but they really didn't know what they were about to face.

And this is an important thing. These women were about to walk into a real and empty tomb.

It is important because we live in an age of reason. We live in an age where knowledge is power. And really smart people like modern theologians and most mainline clergy, have thought through the account of the resurrection and simply don't believe it. The Christian faith has been trained out of them. It is like the issue of creation and science. No matter how complex life on earth is, no one is allowed to say Divine Design. You will be run out as a fool. Not smart. Backwards.

The same is true in theology. Never admit that events recorded in Holy Scripture actually happened. You may use as many God words as you like, but never say the earth is about 6,000 years old. Never say, the prophet Jonah was swallowed by a whale and lived to tell about it. Never admit that the Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, suffered and died, descended into hell and three days later....rose from the dead. Use as many spiritual words as you like but don't admit these events are facts or no one will take you seriously.

Are you looking for a good theology professor or a good pastor?

Here are two question you should ask him and both answer should be yes before you place yourself in his care:

The first question:

Do you believe in the physical, bodily resurrection of Jesus the Christ?  The question has to be this specific. Give no wiggle room.  You don't want to hear about an Easter faith that rose in the disciples.  You don't want to hear about the myth of Jesus rising out of history.  You don't want to hear about a spiritual rising.

What you want to hear is, "Yes, I believe Jesus physically, bodily rose from the dead." Or you are talking to a false teacher.

The second question:  Do you believe in the Virgin birth of Jesus Christ?

You want to hear, "Yes." Or you are talking to a false teacher no matter how kind or witty they may be.

And, if the pastor you ask is a woman and not a man? You are already speaking to a false teacher who does not hold to the testimony of the Holy Spirit as written in Holy Scripture.

But the women at the tomb, they were prepared to do the right thing to Jesus' body, the traditional thing for His body. So, what are they to do when they find the tomb stone rolled away and the body gone? They were not prepared for that.

The first thought might be a grave robber. It is a thing.

The second thing, though, is the women saw a young man, a young angel, sitting there. And? That did not help. The women were now afraid.

The third thing that happens is amazing and unexpected. The angel said, "Do not be afraid, because..." and then gives a reason why the women should not be afraid. How tender is that. The angel knows they are afraid and gives them reasons not to fear. He says, "You seek Jesus of Nazareth who is crucified. That Jesus is not here. That Jesus is risen from the dead. Even now, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. There you will see Jesus just as He told you.

Wow. We live in a rationalistic age. We crave reasons for why things happen. How fitting is this teaching of the resurrection for you and me today.

Why should you not be afraid of Christ's resurrection when people might think you a fool?

The reason is because the forgiveness of sins will come to those who believe this Gospel. Forgiveness comes not to the perfect. Forgiveness comes to those who are afraid of their sins.

This is so poetic.

Slowly but surely Jesus taught His disciples. They saw His miracles:

Little girl, arise!

Lazarus, come out of the tomb!

Jesus stopped a funeral procession outside the town of Nain. Jesus put His hand on the boy's coffin and said, "Wake up."

This is why Jesus had such a powerful following when He entered Jerusalem.

But even with all that knowledge and experience, the disciples were not prepared for the horrific persecution, torture, and death of Jesus.

But this next thing is important, the disciples needed to be completely devastated to be lifted up by the hope and the promises of the Gospel. Or, they would trust Jesus. There would be too many reasons for unbelief.

The same is true for you and me. No matter how long or little you have been in Christ's church. No matter how much knowledge you receive from a Bible study or a seminary. No matter how long you have been a pastor or head of your household. A crisis will come and you will not be prepared. There will be reasons to deny Christ's resurrection.

You cannot be fully prepared for the shock.

The idea of preparing for church.

Change the baby's diaper so you can leave on time – but still be late.

The idea of preparing for Easter.

Buy new clothes so you look good even if the spring dress does not match the weather outside.

The idea of preparing for Holy Communion.

Get yourself into a good mood – only to get cut off in traffic

The empty tomb shows us that it is God who does the work. We don't give anything to God at His service that is owed to Him to make Him happy.

Completely the opposite. You come here to receive good gifts from God. It is His Divine Service.

Christianity is the only religion in the world in which a god does not take something from you but rather gives. So the only thing we can offer to Him that is not a deed of the body or a work of the will or a decision of the mind which are completely lacking in merit – is the faith that the Gospel promises to produce in our hearts.

This faith is Jesus doing what God commands and doing so while being in complete agreement and harmony with our Father in His works and His Words and His Holy Spirit witnessing to this in the Written Word.

The angel at the resurrection said, "Go and tell the disciples."

Jesus before His ascension said, "Go, baptized and teach all nations."

This Resurrection Sunday you are invited return to your baptism in which you die and rise in Christ daily. This Sunday you are invited to return to Jesus' teaching which you have received from childhood. That's what is available for you here every week – the forgiveness of your sins. Jesus rose from the dead so that you may be baptized into Christ's death and receive His ongoing and eternal life. Thanks be to God in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

John 12:1-9 The Triumphant Entry

Pastor Pautz

Grace and mercy to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Holy Scripture for this morning's sermon is from today's Gospel according to John. Let us hear a portion of that Scripture again. It is written in John 12:17-18.

17The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this miracle.

Thus far the text. Let us pray:

Creator Father, Your Son raised Lazarus from the dead and then entered Your holy city Jerusalem to die Lazarus' death and become the atoning sacrifice to save all sinners from death. Save us, O Father, by sending Your blessed Son, who comes in Your name, to give us His resurrected body and blood to us to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of our sins and so that our bodies may rise on the last day too, never to die again; in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem is connected to the raising of Lazarus from the dead.

Many people saw the resurrection of Lazarus. Four days after Lazarus died, Jesus showed up and wept for His friend. "Move the stone," Jesus said. Martha calmly but sincerely suggested otherwise, "It will stink." Jesus replied, "Did I, Jesus, not tell you that if you believe you would see the glory of God." So, they rolled away the stone. Jesus prayed. Then Jesus said, "Lazarus, come out."

And Lazarus come out of the grave.

And many witnessed Lazarus' resurrection.

And every eye-witness was talking and more than a few were plotting Jesus' death.

And then it was Palm Sunday. Six days before the Lord's Passover.

Jesus left Bethany to enter Jerusalem and Lazarus was with Jesus. The large crowd broke into two groups. One group walked with Jesus. The other group ran ahead to tell people that Jesus resurrected Lazarus from the dead and that both Jesus and Lazarus were coming to Jerusalem, so a third group formed and was waiting Jesus' arrival.

Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem is connected to the raising of Lazarus from the dead. But for the wrong reasons.

For Jesus knows the week that he is about to face. Jesus knows that is not riding in a king's triumph, but rather in a convicts final procession to the crucifixion. The crowds don't know it, the disciples don't know, but Jesus knows it: he is riding to his death.

But Lazarus is there. Jesus has power over death. And when someone has that much power...people want a peace of it. One group wants a king. Another group wants Jerusalem's glory years to return. Another group wants to see the mighty Romans paraded out of town. Other groups want Jesus dead.

You want something too. Something different than a dead and bloodied Jesus, I suppose. One group wants confirmation over with so they don't have to study the Holy Scriptures anymore. Another group wants more programs so more people can get involved so they can feel better about their unbelief. And everyone wants a better street view of our sanctuary as long as the design is their own and the price tag is for someone else. And yet it is your unbelief that does not want to hear that faith in a dead and bloodies Jesus is your hope for the life of your soul and body.

So, repent. Repent by the Law and believe by the Gospel. Repent by studying the Holy Scriptures and believe by asking God for mercy. Repent of attaching strings and demands to your offerings and believe that our Father is taking care of you. Repent of your plan to spend the congregation's offerings and believe that their use is for distributing Jesus by His means of Word and Sacrament.

Repent and believe that Jesus loves you without any strings attached or for any other purpose that to save your from your sins and give you life, without any merit or worthiness in you.

This Thursday, Jesus will tell you again how changed the Lord's Passover to the Lord's Supper so that death will pass over you and you will be freed from bondage to your sin. This gift will be received by faith.

This Friday, Jesus will tell you again how He suffered and died as your sin, so that you will never experience the horror of death even though one day you will die. This gift is received by faith.

This Saturday, too, is a special service. Jesus will tell you of His descent into Hell and how you are now already mostly resurrected from the dead. Your soul already experiences eternal life. Only your skin and bones need the renewal. This gift is received by faith.

Faith, not in crowds or selfish desires, but in the Annointed One who has power over death because He is the True God who took on your humanity into Himself and died as your sin. This is the week Jesus accomplished the atoning sacrifice for your sin. That atonement is finished.

Now, the delivery of that Good Friday atonement by the Holy Spirit's tools. Holy Baptism, Absolution, Holy Communion, Holy Gospel for the forgiveness of your sins. And where there is the forgiveness of sins, there is also salvation and eternal life; in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Let us open with an invocation and Luther's Morning Prayer:

I thank you my heavenly Father through Jesus Christ my Lord, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that you would keep me this day from sin and every evil, that all my doings may please you.  For into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things.  Let Your holy angel be with me that the evil foe have no power over me.  Amen.

And I heard the voice...
Not everybody hears the voice.  The effect of the vision is to both receive some of the Jews and to harden the rest of the Jews.  The Word of God does not always have humble hearers. The majority are proud, whose reason is not mortified/brought low and whose faith is in their carnal/sinful flesh.

Whom shall I send?
Not all prophets received the teaching office the first time it was offered.  For example, Moses and Jonah both refused.

What about us today?  Who would speak publicly against this nation or who would speak publicly against their own church body?

Isaiah accepts the call after being risen from the curse of death to life, has been strengthened by the burning coal, and has been made a different man.  He is ready to face the great difficulty with faith in Christ.

And He said, "Go, and say to this people...
The emphasis is on the word "this" rather than "My" as in this cursed or rejected people.  God is angry that people live to please themselves, will not learn from Him how to view themselves, and will not deny themselves.  The pastors and people are in this together.

Make the heart of this people dull...so that they do not return and be healed.
The point of this passage is to show God's attitude to those who are hardened in heart, who reject the faith, who reject the Gospel.  He forsakes them.

Then I asked, How long?  And He said, "Until...
As if to say, 'You will not be reformed until death has snatched you away.' Meaning, you will never be reformed.  Don't read this as if it pertained only to that present generation of Israel. There is no promise here for the children.

The Lord  has removed men far away.
That is, He will scatter them among the nations.

And the forsaken places are many...
Another way to read this is, "What will have been forsaken?"

And this is the meaning: God does not snatch away after the manner of Satan, who rages in such a way that he tries to uproot everything altogether, but the Lord always preserves a remnant after the evil have been destroyed.

And yet a tenth will remain...
Like a little branch from a forest.  This could be read as a curse, as in 90% will be destroyed.  Or, this could be read as a blessing, as in 10% will be saved.

A holy seed is its stump.  Or...this is the stump of Jesse.  Or...this is the Christ.
So, this is not concerning the Babylonian Captivity in which the corrupt people were enslaved and then corrupt people returned.  This is concerning the Roman Captivity in which Jesus served His ministry.  The holy seed is Christ who is the Seed of the church, the body of Christ, the temple of the Holy Spirit, in which there is no ungodly person but all are righteous in Christ.

Let us close with the Lord's Prayer.

It is written: 46 Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.” ... 51 Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.” ... 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” Thus the text.

Let us pray: Creator Father, You sent Your Son, who is God, to speak Your powerful Word to us who were born children of the devil. We are not Your children just because You created us rather we are Your children because we have heard Your Word. Grant us to keep hearing Your Gospel so that we may not see death; in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Which one of you convicts Jesus of sin? Well, each one of us.

Each one of us was born in the devils kingdom. Jesus is the outsider in that kingdom. Jesus is from a foreign kingdom who invades and wants to take you away. Why do you, who have heard God's accusing Law and saving Gospel, not believe the Christ? You have no faith from above. You hear Jesus but you do not hear God because you are not children of God.

You have family and friends like this, too. They have no faith from above. They hear Jesus but they do not hear God because they are not children of God. And you weep for your family, your friends, even your enemies. They are good people but they have no faith. They are kind people but they remain children of the devil and are comfortable in His kingdom.

Jesus says, whoever keeps My Word, will never see death.

To often this is understood as keeping God's Law without faith. You try to be a good person, but you're never good enough. You try harder but to no avail. God's Holy Law is good but it is also an impossible law. Keep trying but death creeps closer.

Keep God's Word. For this you must be born from above St. John explained this to Nicodemus in John 3. You must be born by baptism in the water with the Word. God's Word and His Holy Spirit are never separated. Where you find water with God's Word added, there you find water with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit-water gives you saving faith from above. The Worded Spirit water is holy baptism.

Keeping God's Word is receiving faith from Jesus, who is God. So, early on the first day of the week, you come here to receive from Jesus. Your hear His absolution and you receive this gift by faith. You hear God's Law and you receive the gift of His holy Law by faith and saying Amen. You hear God's Gospel by faith, of how He died a sinner's death so that you might be born from above, and you receive this holy gift by faith, trusting Jesus, knowing He will do what He says and He will give what He promises to you.

Keep God's Gospel by faith and you will not see death. Jesus does not say you will not die. Rather, Jesus says that those who keep God's Gospel by faith will not experience the full horror of death. Death, for the Christian, will be more like falling asleep at night and rising from the dead, for the Christian, will be more like waking up to a sunny day.

How do you fall asleep? You don't know how it happens but it does happen. You get tired. You lay down. You wake up in the morning. Sometimes you are so tired you are asleep before your head hits the pillow. Sometimes you are so stressed you count sheep into the middle of the night, but you still fall asleep. Sometimes you know your bedtime and when the hour comes you go through your routine and when you lay down you are asleep within a few minutes. In each case you fall asleep, but you don't know exactly how that happens.

How do you die? You don't know how it will happen but it will happen. Like sleep, you get tired, lay down, and wake up to Jesus. Some of you will die quickly, by accident or heart attack but you won't be fearful because you, by faith, you are born from above. Some of you will be ill for a long time before you die, but the pain won't be any greater than a sleepless night. Some of you will go through your evening routine and never wake up in the morning. The point is that you will not experience death and hell. That is for those who have no faith. You know people who have died in various ways. In any case you will die, even though you don't know exactly how it will happen. But even in dying you will be keeping God's Word because you trust Jesus to do what He has promised. Jesus won't keep you from death but He will keep you from seeing/experiencing death.

How can Jesus do this? Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” Truly, truly, I AM God, says Jesus. God first gave His name as I AM to Moses at the burning bush. Jesus appeared to Moses and when Moses asked Him for His name, Jesus said, I AM, tell the Israelitess that I AM is sending you to free them from the Egyptians and bring you to the promised land. Sometimes you ask, Where does Jesus ever say He is God? Well, hear is one of many. Jesus said, the whole Old Testament is aout Me (John 5). Jesus is the I AM that led the Israelites of Egypt and through the Red Sea on dry ground. Jesus is the I AM who gives you Himself in His Gospel. He give and you receive. One day, He will lead you to death but won't let you see death. Rather, you will wake up on resurrection day in a kingdom foreign to the devil and those who have no faith from above. And it will be ok. In fact it will be a renewed heaven and earth with no tear or sorrow; in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The peace of God, which passes understanding, guard and protect your body and soul in Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
