Sunday Bible Study - Your Son Lives! John 4:46-54
The purpose of John’s Gospel (John 20:31): These things were written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you might have life in His name.
Invocation and Prayer.
Last week we heard that the Samaritan woman at the well and many from her village believed that Jesus is the Christ.
46 So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.
Jesus is in the same town where he He did His first miracle.
47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
It is a helpless feeling to want to help your child but cannot do anything. This man’s child is dying.
48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”
Or, ‘unless you see miracles, you will not trust Me, will you.’
49 The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!”
Jesus is the man’s last hope. What is worse than helplessness but to combine helplessness with hopelessness.
50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.
Helpless/Hopeless plus the The Gospel = faith. The man believed/trusted Jesus at His word.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!” 52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.
This is a similar account as to what happened in the Samaritan village. First the men trusted the woman and then after listening to Jesus, they believe Jesus is God. Here the man trusts Jesus and then he and his household believe Jesus is God.
54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee. Meaning, this is a miracle.
Close with prayer.
